The mpox outbreak has been particularly severe in the DRC, with over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths reported this year. The disease has spread to 13 African countries, some of which had not previously reported cases. This rapid spread has prompted the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to declare a public health emergency of continental security, a move supported by the WHO's recent declaration. Efforts to contain the outbreak include heightened surveillance and the deployment of medical resources, although challenges remain in vaccine distribution and healthcare infrastructure.

Despite the availability of effective vaccines like Jynneos and LC16, the distribution in affected regions like the DRC has been minimal. The first vaccine shipments only arrived recently, and with just 200,000 doses for a population exceeding 100 million, the resources are grossly insufficient. This shortage is exacerbated by the high cost of vaccines and the lack of local manufacturing capabilities, complicating efforts to control the outbreak effectively.

The global spread of mpox and the emergence of new strains pose significant threats to international health security. The WHO and other health bodies are increasing their financial commitments and support to affected regions. However, the ongoing challenges highlight the need for a more robust global response and improved health infrastructure in vulnerable regions to prevent future outbreaks and ensure swift containment of existing ones.
